However, in a more significant way, death in Dark Souls games actually feels a lot less punishing than most other games. The game has no mercy when it comes to devious traps and aggressive enemies that will hit you when you're down. And in a literal sense, this is true: When you die, you lose real and tangible progress in the game, and if you die twice before retrieving your souls, you lose those permanently as well. Now, this may seem like a strange thing to say, after all the Dark Souls games (all of them) are famous for being very difficult and very punishing, for not holding your hand like more "casual" friendly games.

#YOU DIED DARK SOULS FULL#
It has a new, previously unpublished chapter, new illustrations, dozens of new in-game photographs in full color, and, of course, a beautifully designed new cover that’s almost as hard as the game itself. This new edition, which will be published by Tune & Fairweather, includes a variety of new features. And it’s also currently the focus of a Kickstarter campaign to fund a limited run hardcover edition. It’s a comprehensive deep dive into Dark Souls as both a game and a cultural artifact, and one of the most thoughtful books about the medium. ( You can read our review from 2016 here.) The book analyzes Dark Souls’ place within the world of games and the larger culture, balancing criticism and narrative analysis with an exploration of the game’s development and how it was received by players and other game designers. Three years ago Keza MacDonald and Jason Killingsworth (a former Paste games editor) co-wrote You Died: The Dark Souls Companion.
